For Mommy - a poem

Here is my Mother's Day post. This is the poem I read at my mother's memorial service and I want to remember her well always.

Mommy

A sweet little pixie came into the world

With big sisters there to show her the ropes

Enchantingly simple as a country girl

In natural play, no grandiose hopes

For her it was a straightforward life

With tests of wellbeing and modest style

A foster sister to ease her strife

She charmed the boys with delightful wile

Her parents died as she left the farm

To grow with students in a time of war

Her connection to God to keep her from harm

A spirit of love, deep at her core

Young men gathered, girlfriends shared

One fellow’s heart fancied this sprite

But he left for the war and she was scared

The whole worlds’ challenge was a bigger plight

She promised her love if he returned

And thus she let go of her childhood years

Her love of God never overturned

And in this security she banished her fears

When the war was over, our family was started

Then her best friend sister, was lost to ill health

But for love of our family she remained open-hearted

Her devotion was blessed with a lifestyle of wealth

She exuded God’s love as a modest wife

But with business and friends they traveled the globe

For a country girl a sophisticated life

Grounded in church her faith not to probe

A mother like no other for all five of her offspring

Our friends were drawn to her natural ease

Fostering children, animals, birds broken-winged

As a nurturing woman she could always please

And though we grew up, we continued our need

And she gave us comfort with a loving heart

And generous spirit by her every deed

She gathered us in love at her time to part

With acceptance of God, not fearing the unseen

Flirtatious and witty with a smile that glowed

She reaped the love she nurtured, she was our queen

A woman we were all so privileged to know

Mommy’s spirit within me forever will live

As my greatest lesson in how to proceed

With an instinctive approach and love to give

And a caring soul to one's times of need
