Garden Music - Poem and illustration
Garden Music

She talks to the plants in the garden
"You can't grow there, Sir Oak"
With a little digging for the roots
Yank! And it's gone in a stroke
"Now, don't walk on my flowers, Missy"
As the cat follows her tasks
"Are you hungry like me, my friend?"
Vociferously suggesting, she asks
In the kitchen she cleans up dishes
The sound of the water makes her hum
Miss Kitty joins her wordless expression
"Ah, yes, our food will soon come."
"Shall, we have a melody to tag on?"
Radio accompaniment inspires the tune
"Good day Sunshine" she parrots
Now her hunger grows, way past
"Tuna will serve us both," she considers
The fish water squeezed into kitty's bowl
"Where did you go, my dear mouser?"
Spotting in the corner, a dead vole
"Sorry Mr. Field mouse for my cat,
She protects my tubers for me"
She whistles the hymn, In the Garden
Like the birdsong high in a tree
Outside after she finishes her lunch
Looking up to the music above
Grey clouds have obscured the sun
"Ah, rain, my garden will love"
As the pitter patter rhythm increases
She retreats indoors, now alone
With the dull, dreary light from her window
The rain's rhythm becomes a drone
A mraow comes from the sash
"Oh, Miss Kitty, do come in"
While drying, they settle on the sofa
Purring and dozing, they're tranquil then
